Barn Fire Wendigo

“Isaac, the barn is on fire!” my wife yelled as she burst through the bedroom door.

“Aw shit, are you sure?” I jumped up.

“Look!” She ran to the bedroom window to the left of the bed, above the oak dresser and low and behold, the old barn was ablaze. The 1876 barn was ablaze.

“Fuck! Megan! Call 911! Hurry! Get the kids up!” I screamed as I bolted out the door.

“What about the animals?” She cried.

“I’ll take care of that, just call 911 and get the kids up” I commanded firmly.

“Okay, okay.”

She ran out the door, down the hall towards the bedrooms and I ran down the blue carpeted stairs to the back door. I grabbed our large hose at the edge of the old farmhouse and turned on the water, running towards the barn as fast as I could. I could feel my heart pumping into my chest to my throat, my palms covered in sweat, my legs and feet were shaky, my stomach in knots, I thought I would lose control of my body.

I ran up to the barn with the end of the hose exploding with water and began to spray down the barn. It was so hot that even being near it made my skin burn. I sprayed down the door so I could control the flames enough so I could get in there to help the animals escape. The two story farmhouse was starting to crackle and pop as the flames grew in size. The cows, horses, chickens, pigs, goats, and other animals cried out of fear and terror.

“Shit, come on! Work, work!” I yelled, fighting for the lives of the innocent livestock.

I continued to spray the hose on the burning barn, but the flames still continued to grow larger. A large plume of flames burst through the door of the doors of the barn, pushing me far back. Splinters from the barn cut my face and hands.

“No! No no no!” I sat up.

Animals began to run out of the barn, and yet it was a truly awful sight. Some were on fire, some were charred beyond belief, some were covered in splinters, and others were covered in bloody slashes. Only a few came out unscathed. A loud screech could be heard from the barn. It was something I have never heard in my life before, something from a nightmare. A pair of bright white eyes were visible in the open window on the top front on top of the barn. I turn around and see two fire trucks pull up behind me. I look back up to the window and the eyes are gone. I feel myself growing faint, things started to go dark. I just couldn’t fight the feeling.

My body collapsed to the ground.

The next thing I know I wake up in a hospital bed with bandages on my arms and forehead.

“Whoa, why am I in the hospital?” My wife and two adult children and two preteen child was there.

“Megan, David, Lily, Joseph, Hannah! Ah! You’re all here. Even Grandma and Grandpa are here!” I felt a sense of warmth and relief as I saw them here with me at the hospital.

“You suffered some third degree burns and inhaled some of the smoke from the fire, causing you to pass out. You’re going to be okay! You just need to rest for a little bit.” My wife said with her sweet voice.

“That was really scary Daddy.” Hannah said as she ran up to me and hugged me. Her blonde hair spilled onto my arms as I held her.

“We’re glad that you’re okay son, you gave us a little bit of a scare going out there so close to the barn.” My dad said. My dad aka grandpa rarely expressed his emotions, so this really meant a lot to him if he said something like this.

“So, what happened to the barn? Has it burned to the ground?”

“Well, at least 65% of it is gone hun. We’re going to have rebuild most of it.” My wife said in a pitiful tone.

“What caused the fire?” I scratched my head and wondered why it could’ve been because the barn was up to code.

“It’s still under investigation, but what the firefighters did find was the gas line was slashed.” My wife nodded.

“What about the animals?” I asked anxiously. “Did any of them make it?”

“Well, there’s a serious issue with that. None of them made it.” My wife was somber.

“What?” My jaw dropped. “How is that possible? I could’ve sworn I saw a few escape unscathed!” I yelled. Everyone looked at me, startled by how loudly I yelled.

“I’m, sorry.” I sighed. “How did it happen?”

“Well some of the animals burned to death as you know, some of them died from penetration of the splinters or inhalation of the smoke, others died from these gashes and cuts that no one really knows where they came from. Someone thinks that maybe a bear or maybe even a timber wolf or coyote might’ve gotten to some of the animals. However, I have never seen gashes like this before.” My wife kept pondering on how the other animals died.

“It wasn’t a bear, nor a wolf or coyote, it was The Wendigo.” An elder man in Native American garb walked into the hospital room.

“Dancing wolf!” Hannah ran to the man known as Dancing wolf and gave him a hug. He smiled and hugged her back.

“Dancing wolf.” My wife said.

Haunted Town- Entry 5- I calmly intervened

“Can everyone please just shut up? This isn’t helping us getting out of here!” I couldn’t help but yell, their voices were relentless.

“You’re right, bitching at each other isn’t going to get us anywhere.” John sighed.

“Why don’t we split up! Daniel, come with me!”

“Splitting up isn’t such a smart idea Taylor.” I tried to convince her, but I was sure my words fell on deaf ears.

“I’m with them on this Taylor, I’m sorry.” Daniel said.

“I’ll be fine! I’ll flag down the first car I see and come and get you guys.” She sighed and walked off into the fog. A few moments later she was right back where she started.

“What? I walked away from you!” Taylor yelled.

“Well, she’s lost in a world of her own.” Angela said as she swirled around her arm.

“No I’m fucking serious!”

Taylor bolted back into the fog and ran back into us. The only difference is she was covered in this thick watery substance. It looked like blood, but it was a deeper red, almost like tar. She freaked out and wiped it off as quickly as she could.

“What the fuck happened to you?” Daniel said as he went to her side.

“It won’t let us fucking leave! Now I’m covered in this blood gooey shit!” She cried.

“Deep breaths Taylor. Now let’s try something out, I want all of us to form a line together and walk towards the fog.” John informed us.

“What are we forming a kid’s line? Okay, okay I’m coming!” Angela said in a playful then rushed tone.

We went into the fog, then came out together. We had droplets of the red substance on us, but it was easy to brush off.

“I will admit, that is quite strange.” John said with a puzzled look.

“It seems like heading into that damn town might be our only option. That trail is impossible to navigate in this fog!” Angela said.

“She’s right.” Daniel agreed, and so did I.

“You’re leaving me? With them? Daniel?” Taylor latched onto him and begged.

“I’m sorry, but I agree with them on this one that splitting up isn’t a good idea.” Daniel said in a tone of disappointment, but reassurance that everything was going to be okay.

“In town there are people, a working phone, something that can get us help. That trail is too risky. We could get lost very easily in these woods. The fog is going to make it near to impossible for us to find our way through the trail.” John said assertively.

“Alright, into town we go.” I said with a hopeful spirit.

With that, we were down the road into town. With our flashlights and phones we followed the road lined with woods, street lamps, and the occasional derelict buildings. Suddenly there was footsteps coming from behind Angela and I.

Haunted Town- Entry 4.6- Goddamn I’m Scared

As soon as I dropped the phone I heard a ringing in my ears and I couldn’t help but close my eyes. The pain I felt was relentless! I opened my eyes to see a ring of in the middle of the woods. The fire was almost as tall as I was and it glowed almost a crimson red. In the middle stood a little girl in colonial clothing reading a book. I couldn’t quite see what the book was, except it had shapes on the cover. She put the book down and looked at me, smiled then went back to reading.

I close my eyes and open them again to see that I’m back in the bar.

“Andrew!” John yelled. Everyone ran up to me.

“What happened?” Angela asked.

“Did you get ahold of anyone?” Daniel pressed.

“Well I did get a hold of someone on the line, but it wasn’t too clear. A female answered the line. I told her everything with the best of my ability… then-“

“Then what?” Taylor asked in a concerned tone as she touched my shoulder. She could tell I was spooked by something.

“Then I heard what sounded like a roar over the phone. And then after that I was taken to a different time. I was in this ring of fire and she was reading this book and she looked at me and smiled! The next thing I know I’m back here.”

“Take it easy Andrew. I think we’re all a bit stressed out from the fog and the crash. You did take a bump to the head so maybe you’re a bit confused.” John said, looking for a reasonable explanation for what I saw and felt.

“I’m not surprised that you saw something young man.” Vince got up from the aged barstool, grabbed his green coat, and headed towards the squeaky door.

“Little Hope definitely has a deep and dark history to it. Not many folk live here anymore because of it. I suggest you get the hell out of here while you still can.”

Everyone began to follow Vince as he walked outside into the street to his bike parked on the light post.

“Vince, wait!” John reached out to him. “Why are you still here?”

“There are no demons to claim me, I have nothing left to fight for. It’s just myself and my roots. I have nowhere else I’d rather be. I’m not afraid of an old ghost town. You are the ones that need to leave. Don’t get caught up in this place. This town has claimed too many people already.”

Vince got on his bike, but turned around to look at everyone.

“There’s a road up ahead. It goes on a trail that crosses the old school and bridge. Keep going on that road. You’re going to reach a diner that has a working phone. It was nice to meet you folks, but please don’t ever come back to this god forsaken place. Best of luck to you.” And just like that, Vince was gone.

“We need to get out of here right the fuck now!”

“Please calm down Taylor.” Daniel said.

“Why should I? If it wasn’t for our crazy fucking teacher we wouldn’t be here! We’re stuck in shithole central because of this stupid field trip.” Taylor pouted.

“That is way out of line! I had absolutely no idea that the bus was going to crash. I don’t want to be in this situation with any of you either, but here we are!” John raved on trying to assert himself against Taylor.

“Even though it’s John’s responsibility to keep us safe, being nasty towards him isn’t going to help.” Angela said.

“Don’t get me started. Maybe you should both get lost in the fog.” Taylor snapped.

“If anyone thinks they could do a better job, step right up!” John stepped outwards towards the circle.

The constant chatter of the group began to swarm my head, I just couldn’t take it anymore. I had to say something.

(Disclaimer: this is a Little Hope Fan fiction, this is all for fun! All rights reserved. Original credit goes to Dark Pictures Anthology. The story is a bit different but has similarities just to mix things up. You can make choices that affect the story.)

“Andrew!” Everyone yelled in unison as I yelped when I dropped the phone.

“Are you okay?” Daniel and Taylor quickly came up to me, then Angela and John.

“What happened? Did you get ahold of anyone?” John asked.

“You look pale.” Angela said, acting concerned.

“I got a hold of someone. A male voice answered the phone, but it wasn’t quite clear. I was able to tell us where we were and what happened, where we were, it was just hard to make out everything he said. Then he cut out and another voice joined the line.”

“Another voice? What do you mean another voice?” Angela was pressing for more answers.

“It sounded like mine, but deeper, and it had an accent to it. It thought I was the Devil’s work and that it wouldn’t ‘succumb’ to it.” I said using my fingers as quotation marks.

“I wouldn’t doubt that you heard something strange like that young man.” Vince chimed in, looking at everyone from the barstools. “Little Hope itself is cursed. Now I suggest you get out of here, before things get worse.”

“Why are you still here then? Why is it that you can’t hear or see those things, but you know of them?” I was scared, but I was so desperate for answers. I needed to know what was going on with this town!

“Well, there’s nothing left for me to fight for. I stick to my roots, they can’t hurt me like how they can hurt you.” Vince got up from the barstool, put his beaten up green coat on, and started to head towards the door. We followed him out into the street to where he parked his bike. We couldn’t just let him leave so soon with this conundrum on our hands. It weighs heavy on our minds like how the fog does in the streets.

“It really was nice meeting all of you kind folks, but this town has taken the lives of too many people. There’s not too many people left here in Little Hope. Now I suggest you pull your bootstraps up and get the hell out of here.”

“But the fog, it won’t let us leave!” Taylor yelled at the man who got onto his old blue bike.

“There is a trail that is just up the road from here. It will take you up the River through an old hiking trail. You’re going to pass by a bridge that is by the old Little Hope Middle School and an old Bridge. Do not cross it! Stay on the road. You will eventually find the diner up the road. They have a working phone. I wish you the best of luck.” Vince peddled off into the fog.

“There’s something that seems off about him.” Daniel said.

“What does he mean about our roots not being easy for us?” Taylor said as she shrugged in confusion.

“We can’t stay here anymore. I say we head towards the bus!” Taylor said.

“You’re joking right? Splitting up is not something we should do at all. Haven’t you guys watched horror movies?” John said assertively.

“Yeah, they’re dumb and they don’t make sense which is why I want to go back. Besides, there’s stuff back there that I want to get that might be useful.”

“Like what? I want to know what thing of yours you want to get is so important.” Angela said in a skeptical tone.

“When are you going to get off my back? There’s nothing wrong with going back and getting-“

“Your other phone? Makeup? A charger? Those things don’t matter to us right now! What does matter is staying close to town so when help arrives we can be here to get it.” Angela was really starting to push Taylor’s buttons.

“I was going to say possibly another flashlight, a first aid kit, and yes maybe my personal belongings!” Taylor yelled.

“Lay off Taylor. It’s been a rough night for everyone.” Daniel blurted out.

“Ah I see you have your boyfriend sticking up for you too?” Angela said with a mischievous smile.

“Will you stay out of our business!?” Taylor exclaimed. “God.” She whispered to herself as she put her hand to her face.

“You’re right, I’m sorry. It’s been a rough night. I just can’t wait to get out of here.” Angela sighed.

“It’s our teacher’s fault for getting us into this mess!” Taylor pointed at John.

“I didn’t know we were going to get into this crash in the first place. You can’t just blame it all on me.” John said in disbelief.

“We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for this stupid little field trip.”

“Watch your tone. I had no control over what happened tonight.”

“I don’t want to be stuck here with you, maybe you should get lost in the fog!” Taylor yelled.

“I wish I could, but apparently this fog decides if we can or can’t leave!” John exclaimed.

“Can you please stop fighting, this isn’t helping with anything.” I started to feel annoyed.

“If anyone thinks they can do a better job, step right up!”

“This can’t be real, I mean what the fuck.” Daniel blurted out.

The chatter and fighting got louder and louder. It drowned out my own thoughts, I had to stop this.

Haunted Town- Journal Entry 4- He Had The Drink…

“Sure! I could use a drink. It’s been a hell of a night.” John didn’t hesitate to grab the shot glass of whiskey. He swallowed the drink whole and slammed down the glass.

“I don’t think that was a good idea professor. You need to keep a clear head.”

“Do you want another drink?” Vince asked.

“Nah, one is good for now. Thank you kindly for your generosity! I deeply appreciate it.” John seemed to feel a sense of relief after having the drink.

FYI I switched to texting so no one can hear me.

“So I beg to ask the question, where is your phone?” I asked in an anxious tone. I couldn’t help myself. I started to feel this heaviness in the room, like as if we were being watched by someone, but more like something.

“Your phone doesn’t work, young man?”

“I have no service.”

“Ah! I have no idea how technology works. We do have a phone, but the line is a bit shaky. These old wires don’t work like how they used to.”

“Hey, we’re going to have a look around!” Angela’s voice echoed in the entire bar.

They looked among the loose leaf papers, newspapers, flyers, and photographs. I couldn’t quite overhear their conversations, but what I did know was that I was desperate to get to that phone. John and Vince continued to talk as I walked off towards the phone. I could vaguely overhear something about a ‘freak accident’, and ‘witch trials’, but I couldn’t care less.

I got to the phone which was an old, dusty, black dial up phone which seemed to be way past its expiration date. Some of the numbers were either broken off or faded on the dial on the phone and some of the paint was starting to chip away. I thought to myself, Man this place is old! I dialed 9-1-1 and at first the phone just rang and rang… and rang… until finally I heard some static. Finally a voice!

“9-1…. wh-a… is… yo-r em-rge-…cy?” A young female voice answered the phone.

“Yes hello my name is Andrew! We were in an accident up the road. We’re here in the Black Cat Bar up in Little Hope. We plan on going into town. Please send help to Little Hope! There are five of us!”

“Is an-y… hu-t o- mi-ing? I n-d a -… inf-ma-tion.”

“No one that we know of is hurt. It’s me, Andrew Foster, my professor John, my peers Taylor, Daniel, and Angela. The only one missing is our bus driver and I believe his name is Anthony.”

“W- wi… end -lp -…oon.”

“Oh thank god. How soon?” I felt a sense of dread as the static started to grow louder and louder. It began to give me a splitting headache.

“An-ony is -ed. For-et -im.” the voice started to grow almost demonic. I couldn’t understand it. Then a loud crashing sound was made next to me. A glass fell from a shelf and scared the shit out of me. Soon another voice hopped on the line.

“What is this?” The voice sounded like a deeper male’s voice, similar to mine, and yet still different. It sounded like it was from a different time or place, perhaps both.

“Who are you?”

“This is the Devil’s work here. I will not succumb to a witch’s spell. Your twisted words will fall on deaf ears.”

“I don’t understand.” A loud roar filled my ears before the line went dead. It caused me to drop the phone. It scared me to death. I didn’t know what to think.

Haunted Town- Journal Entry 4- No Drink

“Thanks, but I think I’ll pass on this one. I gotta keep a clear head.” John sighed in relief knowing that he made the best choice that he could.

“Suit yourself. Like I said before, drinking is all I have left.” Vince paused and took a drink. “After the tragic history this town has been through.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“What is it that you’re talking to? A cell phone?” Vince asked.

“I’m keeping track of everything on my phone just in case if anything happens to us or if we ever get in touch with someone. I have no service so I can’t call 911. This is all the phone is good for.”

“Ah I see, like a diary.”

“We’re going to have a look around!” Angela exclaimed to John and I.

“See what you can dig up.” Said Vince.

I could hear Angela, Daniel, and Taylor rustling through newspapers, loose leaf papers, old flyers, and pictures laying around the bar. I could overhear them talking about how interesting everything looked as they looked through the historical monument that is this old bar.

“Do you have a phone?” John asked calmly. I knew inside he was just as anxious to get out of here as everyone else.

“We have one, but the line isn’t very reliable. These wires are so old they just don’t work like how they used to.” Vince poured another drink.

“It’s worth a shot.” I said.

I walked off to try out the phone. John and the old man continued to talk as Taylor, Angela, and Daniel looked around. I found the phone. It was so old, like decades old, black and covered in dust. It was one of those phones with a top handle and buttons that spin. A couple of the numbers were almost faded away or missing, but I knew what was what. It didn’t matter to me, what mattered was going home safe and sound.

“Here goes nothing.” I spun the numbers to 9-1-1. I could hear a couple clicks and then a ring as I put the phone handle to my ear. It rung three more times before I heard a very raspy, static filled voice.

“9-1… wh-a … is yo-r emerge-y?” A mature male voice said over the phone.

“Yes! Hello, this is an emergency! We had a bus crash down the road and there are five people are here at Black Cat Bar in Little Hope.”

“I-… c..an se… ..lp but I- ne-… -ore info…-tion.”

“My name is Andrew, Andrew Foster. The others are Taylor, John, Angela, and Daniel. Our bus driver, I think his name is Anthony, is missing.”

“I-… an…. hu….rt?”

“No I don’t think so, it’s just our bus driver is missing. Please come to Little Hope. Please come to town! We need help!”

“A…. som…. wi….” the static got louder and I swear I could hear other garbled noises on the other end.

“Hello? Is anyone there? Hello???” Then the static got quiet and another voice chimed in.

“Who is this that beckons for my time?” It sounded like someone from another time or another place. Nowhere I can necessarily pinpoint.

“What? Who are you?”

“This is the work of the Devil. I will not give into its filthy tricks.” It was a deeper voice, yet had a ring similar to mine. “I withhold my name from you heathen.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You are cursed!” A massive roar of static and some unknown creature came through the phone. It was ear shattering! The noise scared me so much that I dropped the phone to the floor.

Who Decided that this was a good idea: Put your earbuds in and snooze

Apple-OEM-Earbuds-for-iPhone-6-and-6-Plus“Hey Mike, are you okay?” Jen asked drowsily as she stretched her arms upward with a yawn.

“Yeah, I’m fine. I think I’m going to just pop my ear buds in for a bit and snooze.”

“Are you sure you’re alright? You normally wouldn’t turn down hearing anything what your clown of a best friend would say.” Sandra asked with concern.

I laughed and said, “Haha, you’re right about that. With Joey there never really is a dull moment.”

“Hey, what can I say? I’m the kind of person that always has a story to tell and a crowd to impress.” It made sense that Joey was this way. He had always wanted to be an author or writer of some sort. He was excellent at public speaking and had such a great way with words. He wasn’t quite the athletic type, but in grade school he nailed his performances in the Theatre arts, Writing Contests, and the Debate Teams he participated in every single time. His room lines the medals and trophies to tell the tale.

“Tonight is an exception though. I really just want to get some sleep for a few minutes before we go home.” I got all kinds of stares from my buds in the back seat. Jeff or should I say ‘Electron addict’ didn’t even lift an eye from his brand new ipad. “It has nothing to do with Joey, I swear.”

“Come on guys lay off. If Mike wants to sleep, he can sleep!” Joey smiled sweetly while gently patting my shoulder. With that being said, I put in my earbuds and fell right to sleep. Listening to meditation music always helped me sleep. My mom played it for me when I was little to help me sleep and relax when I was stressed. I’ve always been a generally anxious person. However, meditation and practicing mindfulness and spirituality makes things a bit easier on me. I was out like a light.

The next second I felt a thud that made me move forward a bit and saw that we were stopped in the middle of the road in pure darkness. Not even the lights of the car were on. The only thing I could see was the screen of my phone that shined a blue light upon my face. I felt a hand grab my right shoulder and I looked back at a gruesome sight. My friends faces were gone and replaced with what I could describe from a surrealists’ painting. Their eyes were black and lined with blotches of red and white circles. Their mouths were wide open and stretched from various angles which looked like wet paint puddles you’d find on the floor in child’s craft area. Their faces were grey and smudged with an ash like material. They all in unison started to moan and growl at once while staring at nothing. It continued to grow louder, and louder, and louder until another hand, which was Joey’s grabbed and yanked my left shoulder down to his face… my god his face… It was just an open mouth drooling black blood…. with his eyeless, noseless, and earless head covered by his curly red hair. He made the same goddamn noise that the others did! I screamed and jumped out of the car with my cellphone in hand. I fell onto the shallow ditch on the side on the road that started to cave in. Those faces who posed as my friends stared down at me as I fell straight down into a rickety old wooden coffin lined with cotton several meters under ground. There was a hole about the size of my body up top and those things stood around the hole.
