The night before I went to the psychiatrist, I had a bizarre dream. It was out of context from the dreadful nightmares I was having every night.
Yet again I saw the wooden grave sticking in crabgrass, the muddied dress shoes I was wearing, the bloodied shovel that was off to the side, and the terrible voices that wouldn’t stop. Except, this time I looked up beyond the wooden grave and saw rows upon rows of shadowy human-like silhouettes with glowing eyes; like an animal’s eyes that glow in the darkness. They stood in rows from tallest to shortest; tallest in the back, shortest in the front. The voices stopped when I looked up at them. I couldn’t take my eyes off of them for whatever reason. I absolutely was petrified. The shadows dissipated and what I saw horrified me beyond belief. Dozens of people, men, women, children, and even animals were there. All of them were mutilated, covered in deep red gashes and putrid black mud. Each and every one of them began to laugh hysterically. I collapsed to my knees and covered my ears. The incessant demonic laughter still pierced through my ears and shook me to my core.
Suddenly I felt a hard yank on both of my arms and I fell backwards. The ghastly site turned into a blank space of whiteness. A massive glowing blue light appeared in front of me and a silhouette of light stepped towards me. A pale hand reach out towards me and I grabbed it.
“I’m sorry for knocking you down like that kid. Let me help you up.”
“Thanks.” I was helped up and saw what the silhoutte of light really was. I jumped at the sight of the being at first, but then realized that it meant no harm. It was a guy around my age perhaps, wearing a gray hoodie, white t-shirt, red biker shorts, tennis shoes, and was pale as a ghost… no pun intended. He had a major gash on the left side of his head and one of his eyes was completely discolored. He kind of seemed out of place from everything else, but I have yet to explain why.
“Don’t be afraid Alex. I’m not here to hurt you. Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Victor Pascow. I was killed in a car accident while riding my bike to school. I was about your age when I died.” His voice was soft, yet stern.
“Wait, how do you know my name??? And I’m uh well… I’m sorry for what happened.”
“I have been expecting to meet you for a while. And, it’s quite alright. I have been dead for quite a long time now so it really doesn’t bother me anymore.”
“Why are you here? Shouldn’t you be going to some light of some sort?” Something wasn’t right, but I couldn’t exactly put my finger on what it was.
“I’m not going to any kind of light any time soon. I am here to protect you and keep you safe from those ancient hills…”
“Those ancient hills? The what? What are you talking about?”
“It is the origin of your nightmares.”
“Do you know if they will go away or not?”
“They will only go away if you and your friends stay away from the temptation of wanting to go to those ancient hills.”
“Is there something evil there?”
“Yes. No matter what happens, stay away from those ancient hills. They bare unearthly evil in the form of rotten soil.”
“I’m going to be quite frank when I say this; I have never, ever met a friendly ghost before.”
“Why thank you. That’s not the first time I have heard that statement.”
“But, I feel bad that you are stuck here. You shouldn’t be stuck here.”
“Ever since I died, it has been my duty to help warn others of this evil place. I will not leave this earth until either the end of mankind… or…”
“Or those ancient hills are cleansed with divine fire.”
“That sounds a bit extreme, don’t you think?”
“It is not.” He gave me a very serious look and crossed his arms. “The voices that are in your dreams belong to the souls of the damned. They were victims of those ancient hills. The evil permeating within the soil has taken hundreds of lives.”
“Are you freaking serious? Like who?”
“That I am. This needs to be stopped.”
“Like who man??? I still can’t understand what you mean!”
“Families, men, women, children especially… more recently the Creed and Mathew families.”
“How can it be stopped?”
“That is not within your power my friend.”
“Hey, come on now! If what you are saying is true, then we should do something to stop it! I can’t imagine that it would be that difficult, right?”
“It is not that simple Alex. It would take more than just one man to destroy such a massive abomination.”
“Well, maybe it’s worth a try.”
“Just stay away from that place! That is the best thing you can do.”
“But-” I jolted awake from my deep slumber, yet again completely drenched in sweat. Both Danielle and Jeff were sitting on each side of my bed.
“Are you alright Alex? You were talking very loudly in your sleep. Jeff and I just wanted to make sure you were okay.” Danielle put her hand on my left shoulder. I thought carefully on what I was going to say. I didn’t want to scare my friends, nor make them believe that I was absolutely insane.
“Yeah, I’m alright. It was just another bad dream. Thank god that I’m seeing the shrink today. These nightmares have got to stop.”
“Would you like one of us to take you to the doctor?” Jeff asked.
“Yeah, sure why not?” I shrugged and started to get ready for the day. As I looked down from the foot of my bed, I could see Mr. Jenkins and Jack curled together in a large red and black plaid dog bed. I have never seen them do anything like that before. It warmed my heart to see them all snuggling together though.
“Do you want to go study by the local Starbucks by the river after you’re done seeing the doctor?” Jeff asked.
“Yeah, why not?” I shrugged and smiled. Thankfully my grades haven’t suffered from my sleeping troubles, I thought. I’ve still managed to get all A’s in my classes and I’ve even made some new friends too. I wasn’t going to let these damn nightmares get in the way of what I wanted to do.
“They were worried about you too. They kept trying to scratch at your door, so we just left your door open and put a big dog bed for them to lay on. I hope that’s okay.” I smiled when Danielle told me that. I felt a little bit more relieved knowing that I had the support of my friends and family with this whole thing going on.
“Oh yeah it’s totally fine! I didn’t hear them at all last night.”
Today is going to be interesting. I still have a ton more stuff to share, but I wanted to share this dream beforehand. I see the new shrink in about an hour. I’ll post something about it later on today.
